General Information

The design of Unguja is modern and quite unique with lots of large white curving walls and high thatched makuti roofs giving a feeling of space to the central areas. The coconut tree wood furniture is locally sourced, and there are bits of African art spread around such as baskets, and colourful material, which mean that despite the modern design, the lodge retains plenty of Zanzibari character.

Leading down from the reception you come to the main swimming pool, which is surrounded by loungers and plenty of shade. Behind the pool is the main dining area where tables are separated by low walls to give you a bit more privacy, while still retaining a sociable atmosphere.

Behind the dining area is the bar with lovely low hanging lanterns hanging down from the roof, and next to this just outside are plenty of comfortable wicker chairs, where people tend to gather for a drink before dinner.

The 10 spacious villas are all privately set and lavishly expansive. Each villa is beautifully built, crafted and furnished in Zanzibar style. All villas consist of a spacious bedroom, semi open-air ocean view sitting room(baraza style), cloak room with private safe, second floor bedroom and private terrace.

From your ocean view terrace you can watch the local fishermen sailing the Indian Ocean. Guests can choose between 7 sea view villas or 3 baobab villas. The sea view villas all have magnificent direct sea views, including a private terrace directly overlooking the Menai Bay. The 3 baobab villas have their own plunge pool and air conditioning in the bedroom and are oriented towards the garden with several big baobab trees. The Baobab villas have ocean views from the 2nd floor. The lush and tropical garden with old mango and baobab trees are home to many indigenous animals including the rare red colobus monkey.

Unguja Lodge is situated on the southern coastline of Zanzibar Island.
