Night Game Drives
- See predators active at night
- Unique chance to see some of Africa’s nocturnal animals
Some say that it is the ultimate safari luxury. A safari experience under the starts of night will certainly be a sensory experience that will excite, captivate, exhilarate and enthrall.
Leaving your accommodation after dinner, you will set off to discover the nocturnal creatures of Africa. The veil of darkness will hide many surprises for the avid safari goer. The darkness of night is the exclusive domain of predators such as lions, leopards, serval and civet cats. It is also the only time when you might catch a glimpse of elusive nocturnal creatures such as aardvarks, porcupines, genets, bush babies, white tailed mongoose, cape hares and more. You may even get a chance to see hippo’s out of the water(a rare sighting by day), as night time is when they wade out of the waterholes and graze for food on the surrounding plains.
At SafariHQ we find that cat sightings are amongst the most popular requests by safari tourists. Of the six most commonly seen cat species(lion, leopard, cheetah, serval and African wildcat) only the cheetah is typically more active during the day. Lions are clearly the most iconic safari animal and are often found resting in the heat of the day. Lions usually become active in the last 2-3 hours of daylight at which time they scout out potential prey and then once darkness falls they move into hunting action. So if you are looking for some exciting lion action a night game drive could be the answer.
If you have the good fortune to sit in the company of lions at night as their roars penetrate the darkness and reverberate through your body you will realize that wild Africa is so much more than what you see at day.
