4 Day Chimpanzee Trek Gombe Stream National Park
4 Days/3 Nights
Gombe was made famous by British primatologist Jane Goodall, who in 1960 founded a research project that is still in operation today. The matriarch Fifi, the last surviving member of the original community who was only 3 years old when Goodall first arrived at Gombe is still regularly seen by visitors to the park.
Each day you will trek into the forest to observe these animated primates at play. You will find the experience both educational and moving, and you will be enthralled by their behaviour and human like traits. You will also get the chance to swim in Lake Tanganyika and observe the colourful cichlids before departing by traditional dhow boat as you make your way back to Kigoma and your flight to Arusha.

Day 1: Arusha to Kigoma
You will board a charter flight from Arusha to Kigoma, where you will be met at the airstrip and transferred to the Kigoma Hilltop Hotel. The hotel is set on a remote outcrop amongst acres of lush gardens overlooking Lake Tanganyika. Kigoma is the largest town found on Lake Tanganyika and is the gateway to Tanzania’s western parks. You will arrive in time for lunch at the hotel. In the afternoon you will visit the small village of Ujiji, here you will find the famous location where the words “Dr Livingstone, I presume” were spoken by Henry Morton Stanley. The site where this is thought to have occurred is marked by a plaque, between the town and the shore, on Livingstone Street. There are also 2 mango trees that are supposed to have been grafted from the one under which they met. Dinner and overnights stay at Kigoma Hilltop Hotel.
Day 2: Gombe Stream National Park
After an early breakfast you will board a dhow boat and make your way in true African style to Gombe Stream National Park. The dhow cruise takes about 2 hours and there will be many photographic opportunities as you sail past the jungle, game viewing from the decks of the dhow. You will disembark and make your way up the beach to the stunningly private and remote Gombe Forest Lodge. You will arrive in time to enjoy lunch, after which you will depart for your first trek to observe the world famous chimpanzees that inhabit this park. The chimps are the main attraction and were made famous by the pioneering work of Jane Goodall, who in 1960 founded a research program that now stands as the longest running study of its kind in the world.
Day 3: Gombe Stream National Park
After enjoying breakfast you will trek into the forest to watch the habituated chimpanzees going about their everyday business. Your guide will be happy to point out their individual personality characteristics. On your trek you may be lucky enough to spot other primates that inhabit Gombe such as olive baboon, blue monkey, red tailed monkey, vervet monkey and red colobus monkey. The park also boasts 250 species of birdlife as well as numerous beautifully coloured butterflies that flutter through its green canopy. Return to the lodge for lunch. After lunch you may undertake in the many activities offered by the lodge, or you may just wish to cool off and take a swim or snorkel in the azure waters of Lake Tanganyika and observe the many species of cichlids that swim in these waters. Enjoy sundowners as you watch the sunset on Lake Tanganyika from Gombe Forest Lodge.
Day 4: Gombe Stream National Park to Arusha
On your last day you will enjoy a leisurely breakfast and you will sadly bid Gombe Forest Lodge goodbye as we make our way back to the Kigoma. The dhow cruise takes about 2 hours and you will get to take your last photos of this paradise. Enjoy an aerial perspective of Kigoma and Lake Tanganyika as you head back to Arusha where your safari concludes. You may wish to add one of our optional activities as your next destination. Maybe a gorilla trek, or you may just like to relax and enjoy a beach break in Zanzibar.
